Helping local health systems improve support for people of working age with dementia
Over 60,000 people in England are estimated to have young onset dementia, where symptoms develop under the age of 65.
People are often working, raising families, and caring for others. Young onset dementia turns their lives and future plans upside down.
Yet most services are not designed for people of working age. Diagnosis takes over four years on average and nearly half remain undiagnosed. Even after diagnosis, many struggle to access age-appropriate care.
We have a clear opportunity to fix the situation.
Dementia UK and the Young Dementia Network have created a practical framework to help the NHS deliver faster diagnosis and age-appropriate support.
We are ready to work with local and national health systems so that no one faces young onset dementia alone.

Over 60,000 people in England are estimated to be living with young onset dementia, where symptoms develop under the age of 65. By 2040, this will rise to 85,500.
Diagnosis is significantly harder to obtain for those with young onset dementia. The average time to receive a diagnosis is 4.4 years in people aged under 65, compared to 2.2 years for over 65s.
People cannot access the care they need. 42% of people with young onset dementia receive no support in the first six weeks after diagnosis.
We are ready to work with you to discuss how the framework can support you locally. If you would like to talk to us about how to implement it in your area, please email us at campaigns@dementiauk.org
