Over the past year, life for many of us has returned to some form of normality as the restrictions of the pandemic have eased. But we know that for many families affected by dementia, the ‘long tail’ of Covid-19 is still being keenly felt.
Throughout the third year of our 2020-2025 strategy, there has been more demand for our services than ever – and thanks to our supporters, our dementia specialist Admiral Nurses have been able to meet this demand and offer a lifeline to families when they need us most.
Reporting back to you
It’s really important to us to be open and transparent with everyone who comes into contact with us. Our annual reports will show you what we’ve been working on for the past year and the years before.

I am very pleased to say that as of March 2022, we had 376 Admiral Nurses supporting families across the UK. Our Helpline nurses provided expert advice and compassionate emotional support, answering 33,199 calls and emails, and we launched 28 new services in local communities, care homes and hospices.
I am proud that we developed more services for people who often find it difficult to access dementia care and support, securing new specialist Admiral Nurse roles to work with people with young onset dementia, those from diverse and under-served communities, and those with learning disabilities.

A particular highlight was developing our new virtual clinics, offering pre-booked phone or video call appointments to families affected by dementia, which supported 1,300 people in the first six months after launch.
We have continued to develop our dementia resources, including publishing new information leaflets and webpages, growing our social media networks, and becoming one of the
first charities worldwide to host regular Twitter Spaces. These ‘audio rooms’ allow audiences to engage in real-time with Admiral Nurses, other experts and people living with dementia on a variety of important topics.
Our wonderful supporters have gone above and beyond in the past year. Thousands of people took part in one of our Facebook challenges, walking, jogging, cycling, or walking their dogs to raise vital funds. The number of people pledging to leave a gift in their Will soared by over 80%, and our corporate partners donated generously throughout the year.
We also continued to be the voice of families affected by dementia, campaigning for improvements in accessing continuing healthcare funding and providing media comment on key developments in dementia care and support.
None of our work would be possible without our wonderful supporters – and with
someone developing dementia every three minutes in the UK, we are looking ahead to the next stage of our five-year strategy so we can continue working towards our aim of being there for every family that needs us.
Thank you so much for your continued interest and support,
Dr Hilda Hayo
