One of the ways we raise vital funds to support families affected by dementia is through face-to-face fundraising at public sites such as shopping centres and supermarkets all over the UK.
Face-to-face fundraising is where professional fundraisers speak to members of the public in person to tell them about our charity and ask them to make a regular gift.
Face-to-face fundraising allows us to talk to people about dementia, why our work providing specialist dementia support is so important, and how they can help. By meeting them in person, we’re able to have conversations with people who may be interested in supporting us but haven’t had the opportunity to speak to us directly about the difference their gifts will make.
Face-to-face fundraising is a safe, secure and cost-effective way of inspiring more people to support us and recruit new donors committed to giving regularly. This will help us raise vital funds to grow our services and ensure no one faces dementia alone.
This type of fundraising also allows us to raise awareness of dementia and share information about the range of Dementia UK services for people affected by dementia, which means thousands more people will know where to get support if they need us.
Our specialist dementia nurses, known as Admiral Nurses, provide life-changing advice and support to anyone affected by dementia, whenever it is needed. Whether it’s on our Helpline, through our virtual or face-to-face clinic appointments, or in the community, the families we support know they’re not alone.
By donating to Dementia UK through making a regular gift, you will provide vital services, transform health and care systems and spread the word about our specialist dementia nurses so more families can access our life-changing support.
With your support, together we can make sure we offer a lifeline to every family that needs it.
Yes, we work closely with Appco, a well-known and checked professional fundraising agency, to carry out face-to-face fundraising on our behalf. Working this way is more cost effective and gives us access to professional and experienced fundraisers. All of the fundraisers are highly trained, passionate and motivated by our mission.
Our private site fundraisers work in public areas like shopping centres and supermarkets. A list of the sites we will visit each week is available on this page.
Every fundraiser will display an ID card with their name, photograph, employee number and details of the agency they work for. All fundraisers will wear Dementia UK branded clothing.
Our fundraisers will be at Dementia UK’s stand with various branded materials such as pull-up banners, information leaflets, welcome packs and an electronic tablet which they use to complete Direct Debit sign-ups. Our fundraisers will only ever ask for a Direct Debit – they will never ask for or be allowed to accept cash donations.
If you have any concerns about fundraisers in your area, please call our Supporter Care Team on 0300 365 5500 or email supportercare@dementiauk.org
Direct Debits are one of the safest and most effective ways of giving to charity. They reduce administration costs and generate a steady and reliable stream of income, allowing us to plan for the future.
Direct Debits are easy to set up and give you full control over how much you wish to give and when. Your Direct Debit is covered by the UK’s Direct Debit guarantee, which protects you in the rare event that there is an error in the payment and lets you amend your Direct Debit at any time.
Our fundraisers will ask you for your details and once they are entered into their electronic tablet, all the details will be encrypted so they are safe as soon as you have signed up. The fundraiser will not be able to access your data after this point.
The agency we work with give you the option to sign up to regular gifts via contactless methods, either using QR code or SMS technology. This will take you to a website on your mobile phone where you can enter your payment details (account number and sort code) and confirm your Direct Debit sign-up. The details will then be encrypted and sent across to the payment processor.
At Dementia UK, we are committed to keeping your personal information safe. More information on how we look after and use your personal information is available in our privacy notice. If you would like a printed paper copy of this privacy notice, contact our Supporter Care Team on 0300 365 5500, email supportercare@dementiauk.org or write to us at Dementia UK, 7th Floor, One Aldgate, London, EC3N 1RE.
No. Our fundraisers are not allowed to take cash from you. They’re only permitted to ask for regular donations through a Direct Debit. They also can’t take one-off donations.
There is now an option to sign up to regular gifts via contactless methods either using a QR code or SMS. This will take you to a website where you can enter Direct Debit details and confirm your signup.
Your fundraiser will give you printed details of your donation and a welcome pack at the end of your conversation. You will also receive a welcome email, text and phone call, depending on what contact details you provided when you signed up.
You will receive a letter from us confirming your details and notifying you of the amount and date of your Direct Debit donations within 21 days of signing up.
If an error in your Direct Debit is made by Dementia UK or your bank or building society, you are guaranteed a full and immediate refund of the amount paid from your branch.
You can find out more about your rights under the Direct Debit guarantee on the Direct Debit website. You can also cancel a Direct Debit at any time by writing to your bank or building society, or by calling, emailing or writing to the Dementia UK Supporter Care Team:

Dementia UK is a member of the Fundraising Regulator which is the governing body for the charity sector. It monitors trends and complaints about specific methods of fundraising, including face-to-face fundraising, and we must adhere to its Code of Fundraising Practice at all times.
We are also a member of the Chartered Institute of Fundraising, a self-regulating membership body established to coordinate fundraising activity and promote quality, integrity and transparency.
Appco, the fundraising agency conducting face-to-face fundraising on Dementia UK’s behalf, is a Professional Fundraiser as defined under charity law; therefore, it is a member of the Fundraising Regulator and subject to its Code of Fundraising Practice at all times.
We regularly use mystery shoppers to check in on fundraisers on site and listen to the conversations they are having with members of the public to ensure they are representing the charity in the best possible light and that they are fully compliant with the Code of Fundraising Practice.
The Chartered Institute of Fundraising also carries out mystery shops and reports any issues to Dementia UK, where we follow up with the agencies and ensure the relevant procedures are put in place.
All our fundraisers are fully trained by Appco, the fundraising agency, in compliance, vulnerability policies and the Code of Fundraising Practice.
Members of the Dementia UK Individual Giving Team also provide regular training sessions to refresh the fundraisers’ knowledge of dementia, the services we provide and how income raised will be used, plus reminders about compliance and safeguarding potentially vulnerable donors.
At Dementia UK, we are committed to providing the highest levels of customer service and care to our supporters. We promise to take all complaints seriously, to acknowledge them (where contact details have been supplied), and to deal with them in a timely manner.
Please see our Complaints Policy for full details of how to make a complaint and our Supporter Promise for our set of standards for how we work and the service you can expect from us.
As a member of the Fundraising Regulator, Dementia UK is committed to following its Code of Fundraising Practice to ensure we meet regulations. Complaints may result in changes in process and retraining our fundraisers to ensure the highest standards in fundraising at all times.
