Lake District Ultra Challenge
Take on England’s finest countryside as a walk, jog or run for Dementia UK.
Experience the challenge of a lifetime with an incredible team of other hikers, trekking to Uhuru Peak and climbing Kilimanjaro: the highest free-standing mountain in the world!
Taking the Machame route, over 10 days you’ll pass through dense rainforest and high moorlands, taking in the stunning views of the snow-capped mountain along the way.
By trekking for Dementia UK, you’ll help our specialist Admiral Nurses provide life-changing support to more families facing dementia. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
This 10-day trip begins with travelling from London to Tanzania, arriving in Moshi at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. After a briefing and preparation day, the trek starts on the scenic Machame Route, passing through rainforest, moorland and high-altitude desert.
Over several days, you will gradually gain height, trekking via Machame Camp, Shira Caves, Barranco Hut and Barafu Camp. The route is designed to help you acclimatise gently, with challenging but rewarding days and dramatic views across the mountain and surrounding plains.
The summit push begins before dawn, reaching Stella Point at sunrise before continuing to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – the highest point in Africa. After celebrating at the summit, you will descend to Millennium Camp and then continue down through rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you receive your summit certificate.
The trip ends with a final night in Moshi to relax and celebrate, followed by your return flight to London.
Discover Adventure offset 100% of the carbon emissions from your trip, including flights booked with them.
Every penny you raise will help our dementia specialist Admiral Nurses provide a lifeline to more families facing dementia – and we’re here to support you every step of the way.
Organising fundraising activities alongside your main challenge will help you smash your goal. Here are some ideas:
Once you’ve signed up, we’ll send you a fundraising welcome pack that’s full of advice on how to meet – and beat – your target.
Setting up an Enthuse page is a great way to fundraise online. Share your link with family, friends , and colleagues, and watch the donations roll in.
You can use Enthuse to explain why you’re taking on your challenge for Dementia UK, keep track of how much you’ve raised, and even share your training progress using Strava so your supporters can see how well you’re doing. The more you update and share your page, the more donations you’ll receive.
If your supporters are UK taxpayers and their donation is voluntary (not proceeds of a sale), we can claim an extra 25p for every £1 donated – at no extra cost to them. Make sure they fill in the Gift Aid form in your fundraising pack or tick the correct boxes if they’re donating online.
Charity place
Pay a registration fee, raise your fundraising target approximately 10 weeks prior to departure, and we’ll cover the cost of your event place!
Part-payment option
Pay part of the costs for your entry with a lower fundraising target, and we’ll pay the balance of the event place cost.
Full-payment option
You pay the full cost of the event place – then fundraise however you want, with no set target or deadline, and with no cost at all to the charity!

If you’re fundraising through Enthuse, the donations will automatically come to us. If you’ve got cash to pay in, you can do this online, by phone, by bank transfer or by post.
How you can pay in your fundraising money
Every penny you raise will make a huge difference to families facing dementia. Each donation, no matter how big or small, will help you reach your target. Did you know that someone simply donating £5 to your fundraiser could pay for the telephone costs of one family calling our free Helpline for immediate support.
to run a full day of face-to-face appointments for families affected by young onset dementia (where symptoms develop under the age of 65).
to answer calls on our Helpline on a Sunday, when other dementia services are closed.
or a whole week to support a community where people are struggling to access local dementia services.
Simply complete your booking online as soon as possible.
