Dementia UK social media community guidelines

At Dementia UK, we are committed to providing expert advice and support for families affected by dementia.

Our social media channels are a space for community, conversation, finding answers to your questions and sharing experiences.

To ensure this space remains respectful, safe and inclusive, we ask all users to follow our community guidelines.

If you need support, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our Helpline for expert advice from our dementia specialist Admiral Nurses. Call 0800 888 6678 (Monday-Friday 9am-9pm; Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays 9am-5pm, except 25th December), email helpline@dementiauk.org, or book a virtual appointment.

We moderate our channels

We moderate our social media accounts regularly, all year round.

Dementia UK reserves the right to hide or delete posts that we feel are inappropriate or harmful to members of our community.

We can also block users who violate these guidelines.

Thank you for helping us to maintain a respectful and supportive online community.

Together, we can make sure no one faces dementia alone.

Our guidelines

We encourage open, honest dialogue, but personal attacks, discrimination or harassment of any kind will not be tolerated.

Treat everyone with compassion, patience and empathy. Do not post anything that could be libellous or defamatory.

We want our social media channels to be a positive and supportive community.

We have a zero-tolerance policy towards bullying, hate speech and discrimination. We will not tolerate posts that include:

  • racism
  • sexism
  • homophobia
  • ableism
  • any other form of discrimination or hate speech

These will be removed immediately and may result in the account being blocked from Dementia UK social media platforms.

We may also remove posts that include expletives, such as swearing, dependent on the nature of the comment, and remove content that could be deemed upsetting in nature to other members of our community.

We will not tolerate personal attacks against any member of our community. If you have any concerns about the behaviour of another user, please report them to us by direct message or by emailing socialmedia@dementiauk.org.

Comments that name or target individuals publicly, including Admiral Nurses or Dementia UK staff, will be removed.

We understand there may be occasions where you are not happy with Dementia UK or our services, but in these instances we request that you contact us at supportercare@dementiauk.org to discuss this.

Please do not share personal details (such as phone numbers, addresses or medical records), whether they be yours or anybody else’s.

For your safety and confidentiality, we will remove posts containing private or sensitive information.

While our social channels may provide general guidance and share expert knowledge from our dementia specialist Admiral Nurses, they are not a substitute for professional medical advice.

Always consult a qualified healthcare provider for medical concerns, such as your GP, or contact our support services.

Please do not post content that offers medical advice on individual diagnoses or treatments. This includes promoting alternative treatments as we will hide or remove these comments.

Unsolicited advertising, promotion of products or services or spam posts will be removed. This includes fundraising activities not affiliated with Dementia UK.

We cannot promote individual fundraisers on our platforms, however people are welcome to tag us using our social media handles in their posts.

Please stay on topic. Our channels focus on dementia care, support and awareness. Please keep your comments relevant to the subject being discussed.
