Who calls the Admiral Nurse Dementia Helpline?

The majority of callers to the Admiral Nurse Dementia Helpline are close family members of someone with dementia; a spouse or partner, daughter or son. But our dementia specialist nurses can advise on all aspects of dementia and care, so we also speak to neighbours, relatives and friends in different parts of the country, and the person with dementia – or suspected dementia – themselves.

Why would I call the Admiral Nurse Dementia Helpline?

Our nurses have years of experience working with families affected by dementia. We can advise you on symptoms and ways of easing them; on difficulties getting a diagnosis or who to speak to for advice; on the different financial breaks and benefits that you are entitled to; on care homes, hospital stays or getting help in your home; on difficulties accessing care and support in your area.

If you are struggling with any of the physical or emotional impacts of caring for someone, our nurses can help. Even if you do not know what question you would ask a nurse, they can ask you questions about your situation, and suggest practical steps to alleviate some of the issues you are dealing with.

Our nurses are also providing critical emotional and practical support to people with dementia and their family member who are affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdowns.

  • Monday to Friday: 9am to 9pm
  • Saturday to Sunday: 9am to 5pm
  • Open Bank Holidays, except Christmas Day
  • All calls to our Helpline are free

What happens when I call?

  • Our Admiral Nurses will listen to you and give advice, support and information
  • You can take your time. There’s no time limit – many people call for more than 45 minutes – and you can call back whenever you need us
  • If suitable, you’ll receive a tailored information pack after your call which will be sent out in the post or by email
  • All calls to the Helpline are confidential and are answered by an Admiral Nurse
  • We will not share information with third parties except in specific situations where we are required by law, or if there is a potential risk of harm to the person with dementia, yourself or others. For further information please see our privacy policy or ask an Admiral Nurse

Our Helpline is a free and confidential dementia advice and support service for family carers, people with dementia and professionals. Our Helpline offers a confidential service to all who contact us.

We ask that you give as much information about yourself and your situation as you can as it will help us to reply as fully as possible.

We will not share information with third parties except in specific situations in which we are required to by law, or if there is a potential risk of harm to the person with dementia, yourself or others.
