Johnson Fleming held their Time for a Cuppa at work

Johnson Fleming is a leading workplace pensions and employee benefits specialist providing outsourced support to UK businesses. They have been supporting Dementia UK since February 2019 after staff voted for us as their Charity of the Year.

We spoke to Management Accountant, Kate Simms who is part of Johnson Fleming’s Charity Committee and played a key role in getting their staff involved with Time for a Cuppa.

“We thought that Time for a Cuppa would be a great opportunity to bring all of our employees together, whilst also raising money for a fantastic cause. Some of our employees have family and friends living with dementia so they know just how challenging this condition can be.

“Johnson Fleming’s Charity Committee arranged the Time for a Cuppa event – we invited all employees as well as neighbouring businesses to join in the fun. It was our first time taking part in Time for a Cuppa and everyone was so enthusiastic about it. Employees rolled up their sleeves and got involved in baking, and all the cakes were sampled by the Charity Committee (a hard job but someone had to do it!). We awarded prizes to the top three bakers.

“The fun didn’t stop there as our guests got involved with a number of games. They guessed the weight of cakes, guessed tea flavours as well as trying out Dementia UK’s suggestion of Pick a Tea Cup.

We thought that Time for a Cuppa would be a great opportunity to bring all of our employees together, whilst also raising money for a fantastic cause.

“Through all of the staff’s efforts, we raised a total of £338.54. Not only was this down to the dedication of our staff but we were also given a lot of support by Dementia UK. Our lovely contact at the charity sent over lots of materials to decorate our boardroom as well as Dementia UK t-shirts for the Charity Committee to wear. This really helped make our room look great and made us all feel a part of the event.

“I think a great tip for anyone holding their event at work is to have a variety of things going on as it gets everyone talking and having fun. From a business perspective, it was fantastic to know that what we were doing was helping more families with dementia. It was also great for team building and getting to know our neighbouring businesses, it helped to create a really friendly atmosphere on the estate – even the postman and couriers got involved. At the end of the day we went round the business park selling our last few cakes – there weren’t a lot left though…”
