A case study of Admiral Nursing in Sutton

We work in the community of Sutton to help families living with dementia so their quality of lives are improved and carers feel supported. This is saving the borough of Sutton nearly £300,000 in health and social care costs a year. 

The Admiral Nurse service in Sutton was introduced with one Admiral Nurse in March 2014. It is one of the first to sit within a local authority and is operated as a partnership between Dementia UK, Sutton Council and Sutton CCG.  An evaluation of the Admiral Nurse service in its first 12 months confirmed its success and the team has now been expanded to include four Admiral Nurses.

The Sutton evaluation report showed:

  • Cost savings of £296,466 in health and social care in Sutton, in its first 12 months of launching.
  • Family carers who have used the Admiral Nurse service have confirmed its positive impact
    • 100% of carers said the service had improved the support they receive for caring
    • 100% of carers said the service had improved their quality of life
    • 88% of carers said the service had reduced the stress they were incurring due to their caring role.

Karen Denning, Head of Research and Evaluations at Dementia UK, said:

“Admiral Nurses work with the family to ensure that they are better able to understand and cope with the changes that can occur with dementia, so they can stay together as a family for as long as possible. Admiral Nurses’ co-ordination with health and social care providers means that there is a significant cost saving on public budgets.”
