Certificate Programme
‘Working with People with Dementia and their Carers’

 

A modular training programme designed by Dementia UK Training in partnership with the DSDC Network and
accredited by the Open College Network

This six-month programme aims to provide learners with an in-depth knowledge and enhance their skills in providing care for people with dementia and their carers.

The certificate programme comprises 6 core units:

  • Unit 1 – Ageing
  • Unit 2 - Understanding Dementia
  • Unit 3 – Communication with people with Dementia
  • Unit 4 – Person Centred Care
  • Unit 5 – Loss, Stress and Change
  • Unit 6 – Enabling Approaches to Activities of Daily Living

Additional 'Bolt - On' Units are also available:

  • Recognising and Preventing Abuse
  • Behaviour that Challenges
  • Design, Environment and Technology
  • Mental Health in Later Life
  • Rights, Choice and Risk

The programme is assessed using a combination of the following methods:

  • Case study
  • Written answer (worksheet)
  • Oral question and answer
  • Reflective log
  • Practical demonstration
  • Written description (workbook)
  • Role play
  • Group discussion
  • Production of artifact

The course can be completed at three different levels:

  • Level 1 (comparable to NVQ Level 1)
  • Level 2 (comparable to NVQ Level 2)
  • Level 3 (comparable to NVQ Level 3)

There are two ways that you can access the Certificate Programme:

  1. As an individual in Central London on the Open Programme
  2. As an organization you can Commission the course to take place at a venue of your choice

 

As an individual in Central London on the Open Programme

The Open Programme runs in Central London* twice a year from:

  • January to June
  • September to March.

* Training takes place at: Dementia UK, 6 Camden High Street, London, NW1 0JH

The cost of the course is £850.00 per person and includes all course materials.
