The Friends of the Elderly Admiral Nurse

The Friends of the Elderly Admiral Nurse is a new service, which supports the family carers of people with dementia. The role of this service is unique as it offers
emotional and practical support in a care home setting.
Friends of the Elderly Admiral Nurse, Cheryl Rothschild says, "It can be distressing when a loved one develops dementia. Feelings of guilt, powerlessness
or premature bereavement are not uncommon. Family carers need someone to turn to who understands the issues and can provide practical support and advice...
both while decisions are taken about residential care and then once the relative with dementia has moved into a Friends of the Elderly care home."
Support provided by Cheryl to relatives includes carefully assessing the needs of the family carer and offering one-to-one support, setting up groups where
relatives can talk to others in a similar situation, providing practical advice, information and skills to help family carers cope better, helping family carers deal with
their feelings and emotions and providing help and support to both family carers and the professional carers working in the care homes.

Partnership with National Council for Palliative Care (NCPC)

Karen Harrison, Haringey Admiral Nurse, has been seconded to the NCPC since 2008 to provide complementary skills in management and clinical expertise for the NCPC's Dementia Project.
The Dementia Project started in 2007 and builds on the NCPC's earlier work which highlighted the palliative care needs for people with dementia and presented current findings.
The NCPC's Older People Policy Group has overall responsibility for the dementia project and has approved the formation of a Dementia Working Group (DWG) to steer the direction of the work.
Karen has presented her work at a number of conferences, including the NCPC Beyond the End of Life Care Strategy Conference in March 2009, and has contributed to numerous journal publications.
