Hair today...gone tomorrow - Karen shaved her hair off for Dementia UK!
On Monday 5 March 2012, Karen Harrison Dening, Head of Admiral Nursing for Dementia UK, shaved her hair off to raise funds for Dementia UK.

Karen says "Crazy I know, but this is minimal in terms of inconvenience when you consider what carers and people with dementia have to go through on a daily basis.î
Karen explains: "I set the target of £3000, stating I would not sit in the chair for less but as the clock ticked on and the % raised against this early target still had some way to go I decided to get on with it. I wanted to maximise on the anonymity that woolly hats would offer me whilst it was still cold enough to do so!
March the 5th 12 midday.....the salon (The Wacky Hair Company in Cambridge) did me proud! They dressed the mirror with stars, supplied 'fizz' and two glasses (husband came along for a laugh!), gave me a lovely floppy summer hat and also donated a considerable amount to the the pot! Teddy (the hairdresser) and I had fun for over an hour shaving off patches here and there... In the end I walked out with a drafty 'number 2' feeling very chilled. What made the day even more special is that Teddy allowed me to then shave his head, he was so moved by my commitment to the cause.

I (we; you; all of us) raised about £2700. I say 'about' as some donations are still being made, perhaps I will make the magical £3000? So now... would I do it again? NO, and if EVER I suggest doing something like this again please restrain me. I would rather jump out of plane at 11 000 feet! People stare, they laugh, they express sympathy, they avoid looking at me.....they don't understand. It will grow back I keep telling myself and I will be 'restored' whereas when a person gets a diagnosis of dementia there is currently no 'restoration'."
All of us at Dementia UK are very grateful to Karen and her amazing challenge. Thank you Karen - you're a super star!
'House of Payne' Skydive in aid of Dementia UK
Dementia UK would like to say a huge thank you to our team of skydivers from Newport who between them have raised an incredible £9,897.18 for the charity.
The 'House of Payne' skydiving group included Levi Hobby, Lisa Fox Fitzgerald, Alexander Payne, Nick Payne and his father John Payne.
They were motivated to raise funds for the charity as Nick's mother Sue was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's a few years ago. Nick says:
"Sue would not sit back and take this, something had come along and threatened to take her will, spirit and independence. Through the great support of my dad and her husband John, her sister's, brother, friends and extended family we all sent a strong message - Alzheimer's you will have to wait!"
The skydive took place on 6 November 2011 and after a tremendous fundraising effort they have jointly raised a magnificent amount. Thank you once again to Nick, John, Levi, Lisa and Alexander and to everyone who contributed to their fundraising for your truly amazing support.
A big thank you from all of us here at Dementia UK.

Martyn Dawes ran in a local 10K run at Campbell Park Milton Keynes and raised over over £150.00 for Dementia UK.
Martyn says:
"Completed my 1st 10k today in 53.24. I am pleased with the time as being 46 the legs get a little slower! The event was a Movember run hence the drawn on Moustache!"
Nice 'tache' Martyn and thanks for the support!

Bury Fun Day and Open Gardens
The Bury Fun Day and Open Gardens was held in the beautiful grounds of St Paul's Walden Bury on Sunday 17 July.
Visitors were welcome to explore the grounds and there were various stalls selling jewellery and gifts as well as our very own Dementia UK stall and tombola. There were also a great number of games and activities on offer including a bouncy castle and performances from local choirs.
Helen Collins, Community Fundraiser at Dementia UK says:
"Despite the rain we had a really great day and it was lovely seeing young and old enjoy a day out.
The event raised over £2,000 for Dementia UK and we'd like to say a big thank you to Jan Burt, the event organiser and everyone else who was involved for all their hard work in making the day such a success."
